An old barracks is being renovated by studentsA hands-on approach is a tradition at the Department of Civil Engineering at the Giessen -Friedberg University of Applied Sciences. For example, the Hugo von Ritgen House in Giessen southern district was transformed into an attractive study center largely through the self-help efforts of faculty and students. Now, another "self-help project" can be admired in the courtyard of this Department building. Architecture and civil engineering students are enthusiastically working to renovate an old barracks for a new purpose.

Professors Peter Jahnen and Nikolaus Zieske developed the plans together with the students. A construction team of around 15 students is currently creating new space for academic training on approximately 180 square meters of main usable floor area. The old facade has already been removed. Light-filled glass walls will provide favorable working conditions for aspiring building planners, engineers, and designers. Underfloor heating will ensure a comfortable climate. The screed for a small outdoor terrace, which can also be used for socializing after classes, is already complete.

The Department of Civil Engineering is covering the cost of materials. Partners such as the carpenters' guild are supporting the project with in-kind donations. There are no personnel costs. In this way, the members of the construction crew are not only creating additional study space for themselves and their fellow students, but also gaining hands-on experience in construction that will be useful to them in their future careers. The converted barracks are scheduled to be ready for occupancy at the beginning of October, when the winter semester starts. Prof. Zieske believes this deadline is achievable: "Together we can do it. I'm optimistic!"
