To enable convenient computer communication on campus, the University of Applied Sciences in Giessen has put a local wireless network (WLAN) into operation. This creates the conditions for students, in particular, to work on the internet remotely and correspond wirelessly via email.

Access points, which transmit data via radio waves, have been installed at various locations on the university campus. Students can now communicate wirelessly online with their laptops in the cafeteria in Building A or in the auditorium of the building on Eichgärtenallee. To use this new service, you need an email address at the Giessenis also available there at -Friedberg University of Applied Sciences and a network password. Over the next few months, the university aims to analyze user behavior to determine the level of demand for wireless communication services. If demand is high, an expansion of the IT infrastructure is planned. Furthermore, there are plans to open access across both Giessen and Friedberg campuses, allowing students to access the network via Wi-Fi at both locations with a single login code.  

The university registers all network participants and takes precautions to ensure system security, both in terms of data protection and virus prevention. The university also pays attention to health aspects when operating its local wireless networks. For example, electromagnetic radiation emissions are measured, and a minimum distance to building occupants is maintained when installing access points.
