The Technical University of Central Hesse (THM) has once again been recognized for its commitment to improving the compatibility of family and career: Together with 17 other companies and institutions from the region, it received the seal “Family-Friendly Company Wetterau”.
Flexible working hours, home office options, and childcare options: The options for improving the work-life balance are diverse and mutually beneficial. The family-friendly framework at THM includes, among other things, flextime without core working hours and the option of working from home for up to 50 percent of the time as part of the family model. In addition, several parent-child rooms are available on campus.
Employees with dependent relatives are also supported through support programmes such as seminars or discussion groups run by care guides, who provide advice to those seeking support as part of their guidance in this complex area. This offering is complemented by a company health management programme that offers various measures to promote the health resources of all employees and reduce health-related stress. "Our programmes for improving the balance between family and work are a win-win for everyone," emphasizes Annette Schönberger, Head of Human Resources Development and Equal Opportunities at THM.
At the opening of the seventh awards ceremony, District Administrator Jan Weckler said: "We are seeing a change in the world of work. Requirements have changed, and the balance of family and career is becoming increasingly important. And companies must offer opportunities here if they want to retain good employees or attract new ones." He added: "With this family-friendly commitment, every company strengthens not only itself but also the district as a whole. Because this commitment promotes the quality of life in the Wetterau region."
Claudia Taphorn, Head of the Women and Equal Opportunities Department, emphasized the importance of a family-friendly work environment, especially for equal opportunities. "Care work, whether for children or relatives in need of care, is still predominantly performed by women. A corporate philosophy that focuses on the compatibility of family and career also contributes to gender equality. This means opportunities for professional development and financial security for women."
Since 2013, the Wetterau district has awarded this prize every two years to companies and institutions that have distinguished themselves through special family-friendly programmes. A total of 57 companies have received the award so far, twelve of which have already received it for the second time. The project was supported by the Working Group on Livelihood Security and Re-entry.
