The THM has created new doctoral positions in biotechnology, among other things. With its strategic research fund, the TH Mittelhessen has created its own set of instruments with which it expands its research profile and further develops young scientists.

In order to strengthen young scientists, the TH Mittelhessen has now awarded 18 doctoral positions. Professors who are strong in research receive a position for three years, which they can fill with a doctoral student. An extension to four years is possible. The costs of a good three million euros are financed from state funds via the Research Campus of Central Hessen (FCMH) and the “Further development and establishment of research structures” programme.

The doctoral students complete their doctorates in cooperation with various universities. These include the Philipps University of Marburg, the Gießen and Justus Liebig University, the universities in Freiburg, Cottbus and Magdeburg as well as two universities in Spain and Portugal. The Graduate Centre for Engineering Sciences at FCMH is also involved.

Prof. Dr. Frank Runkel, who as Vice President at THM is responsible for research, transfer and young academics, sees the doctoral positions as a strengthening of applied research at the university. “In this way, we enable proven scientists to expand their research profile. Their doctoral students can do their doctorate under attractive conditions with secured financing, so they now have significantly improved conditions for their further scientific qualification.”
