Internationality is very important at the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM). This is illustrated by the "English AS A Medium of Instructance" (EMI) model, which was developed by the Language Center of the University. In coordination with the language center, Professor Holger Rohn from Department Business Administration and Engineering (WI) developed the "Industrial Ecology" module. The aim of the cooperation is to promote the internationalization of the university and thus gain more international students.
Rohn translated all content into English for the module. This included module description and lecture content, but also the laboratory environments in the Life Cycle Management Laboratory and the learning factory of the Department S Wi. Even organizational documents such as the security regulations for the laboratories were transferred to English.
To take part in the course, students are first precisely classified using the Language Center's Oxford Online Placement test in order to determine their starting level. This is the basis for the individual coaching offered by Rose Zeller-Hofer from the Language Center. In personal one-on-one conversations conducted in English, students learn how they can optimize their language skills in the areas of reading, listening, speaking and writing. The associated lecture provides additional knowledge on the subject of foreign languages.
The admission of the course in the THM lecture list for international students led to some foreign students already participating in the new winter semester. In connection with the targeted promotion of language skills, EMI represents an important component of internationalization and illustrates the successful cooperation of the language center with the Department Wi.
