Speakers and award winners: Prof. Volker Groß, Prof. Keywan Sohrabi, Prof. Ulrich Köhler, who received the Science Award from the International Prevention Organization, and Andreas WeißflogThe TH Mittelhessen welcomed around 150 participants from research, industry and clinics to the first Gießen bioacoustics symposium. The Health Department organized the event.

Since the invention of the stethoscope in 1820, auscultation, the technical term for listening to body sounds, has established itself as one of the standard methods in initial medical diagnosis. “Modern recording and evaluation methods now form the basis for comprehensive biomedical acoustics with great potential,” says Prof. Dr. Keywan Sohrabi, Vice Dean of the Department of Health.

Scientists from universities and the medical technology industry presented current research results. This is how Prof. Dr. Hartmut Schneider from the Johns Hopkins Bayview Sleep Disorder Center on “noise pollution in the bedroom”. Dr. Andreas Weißflog (Thora Tech GmbH) presented methods for “recording breathing sounds”. And Prof. Dr. Volker Groß (Health Department) spoke about “Automatic analysis methods”. The “importance of bowel sounds” was the topic of Dr. Jan de Laffoil, senior physician at the Gießen Clinic.

As part of the symposium, Prof. Dr. Ulrich Koehler received the Science Award from the International Prevention Organization. He heads the sleep medicine center in Marburg and received the award for his services to biomedical signal analysis.

The health department of the THM intends to hold the Gießen bioacoustics symposium every two years in the future.
