Prof.Dr. JungIn nationwide rankings of the strongest research universities of applied sciences, the Giessen -Friedberg University of Applied Sciences consistently achieves top positions. A recent example is the new funding program for young engineers in mechanical engineering from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). In the 2007 national competition, 53 universities of applied sciences submitted a total of 101 applications. Of these, 40 projects were selected. The Giessen -Friedberg University of Applied Sciences emerged as the most successful German university of applied sciences in this competition.

The Central Hessian University of Applied Sciences was awarded funding for three application-oriented projects, each running from June 2007 to May 2010. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Markus Schneider from the Friedberg Department Business Administration and Engineering will receive €220,000 in funding for his project "Alternative Cooling Lubrication Technologies for Process Optimization in Grinding." The 37-year-old engineer's project received exceptional recognition in the competition for BMBF funding: it ranked first among all applications in the evaluation by independent experts.

The project led by Prof. Dr. Udo Jung, which focuses on the "concept development of critical passenger car body structures using component calculation models," is based at the Friedberg Department Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, and Materials Technology. The funding amount is €259,000.

€238,000 will go to the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Microtechnology, Energy and Thermal Engineering in Giessen for a project dedicated to the "development of a laser centering device for in-situ control of the centering status during lens manufacturing." The project is headed by Prof. Dr. Thomas Sure.

Industrial companies from the region participate as partners in the research projects. In addition to newly appointed professors, the project teams also include students and young engineers who can gain practical experience in the development of new processes and products.
