Graduates are faced with many questions before beginning their doctorate: What requirements must be met to begin a doctorate? How do you find a topic that you want to work on over several years? Who is a suitable supervisor? How should this phase of your life be financed? And can you organize your time so that the doctoral project doesn't become a "terror without end"? To answer these and other questions for THM students, the Graduate Centers GGS, GGK, GGL and GGN of the Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU), the Research Campus of Central Hessen (FCMH) and the ArbeiterKind.de initiative invite all interested parties to the information event "Paths to a Doctorate" on June 27, 2024.
For one afternoon, everything revolves around making the right decision, choosing the doctoral topic and supervisor, financing options, choosing the graduate center and the best way to start an academic career. The event is aimed at students of all subject areas, those interested in doctoral studies and 'predocs' as well as students who are interested in a cooperative doctorate, for example between the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM) and the JLU.
Depending on the subject area and interests, one of the four graduate centers at JLU can be considered for a doctorate: the Giessen Graduate Center for Social, Economic and Legal Sciences (GGS), the Giessen Graduate Center for Cultural Studies (GGK), the Giessen Graduate Center for Life Sciences (GGL) and the Giessen Graduate Center for Natural Sciences and Psychology (GGN).
The afternoon begins with a lecture that provides information about the most important topics that play a role in a planned doctorate. Afterwards, doctoral candidates from various disciplines report on their experiences and present their personal careers and motivations for tackling the path to a doctorate. During the coffee break, participants can talk to representatives of the graduate centers, the FCMH and the ArbeiterKind.de initiative in person in the information lounge. Finally, in parallel sessions, the individual institutions present their subject-specific features and their diverse support offers for doctoral students and answer individual questions.
