As a building materials expert, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Robert Schulte Holthausen has been strengthening the Department Civil Engineering at the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM) since the winter semester of 2025/26. His areas of expertise include the structure and durability of building materials, non-destructive testing of building materials, and the sustainability and resilience of building materials.
Schulte Holthausen studied civil engineering with a specialization in structural engineering at RWTH Aachen University and graduated with a degree in engineering in 2011. He remained loyal to the Aachen university, initially working as a research associate at the Institute for Building Materials Research (ibac) at RWTH Aachen University in the "Preservation and Repair" working group, which he headed from 2013 onwards.
In 2019, the civil engineer received his doctorate on the topic of "Determination of the pore structure of concrete using one-sided hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance relaxometry." This enabled him to develop new measurement techniques for assessing the structure and durability of mortar and concrete.
Following a postdoc position at the University of Surrey in the UK, Schulte Holthausen moved into the private sector in 2019. For almost six years, he worked at ARDEX GmbH, a manufacturer of specialty construction chemicals for house building. There, he was Head of Research and Development when he received the call to THM .
Schulte Holthausen won the Bilfinger Berger Prize at RWTH Aachen University in 2008 for his outstanding academic achievements and received the Borchers Plaque from RWTH Aachen University in 2021 for his excellent dissertation.
At THM , Prof. Dr.-Ing. Robert Schulte Holthausen intends to dedicate himself to teaching and researching sustainable building material technologies.
