THM has appointed Harald Wack as an honorary professor. Over 20 years ago, the lawyer began teaching "General Legal Theory" to mechanical engineering students at the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen . For several years now, he has also been teaching administrative law in the Climate Protection, Environmental and Safety Engineering programme at the Giessen Department Life Science Engineering (LSE).
Prof. Wack is a presiding judge at the Higher Administrative Court of Hesse and, since 2023, a judge on the State Constitutional Court of Hesse. In addition to his position at THM , he also lectured for six years at Philipps University of Marburg. Wack studied law at Justus Liebig University (JLU) Giessen . In 1996, he completed postgraduate studies in American law at Leiden University in the Netherlands.
At JLU he worked as a research assistant and research associate, and during his judicial career he was seconded to the State Court of Hesse as a research associate.
With the awarding of the honorary professorship, THM recognizes Wack's long-standing commitment to teaching. "We are delighted that Prof. Harald Wack is passing on his extraordinary expertise and many years of practical experience to our students," said THMPresident Prof. Dr. Matthias Willems at the presentation of the certificate of appointment. "Teaching has always given me great pleasure, whether as head of practical study periods, of trainee teacher working groups, as a lecturer at the Hessian Association of Administrative Schools, or as a lecturer at universities," said Wack. With a twinkle in his eye, he recounted that he had, albeit jokingly, considered publishing a book of stylistic blunders after having already marked several hundred exams from mechanical engineering students.
Wack's professional career began in 1994 after completing his studies as a legal trainee in the district of the Frankfurt Higher Regional Court. In 1997, he was appointed a probationary judge and served at the Giessen Regional Court until February 1999. He then transferred to the Butzbach and Büdingen Local Courts and was appointed a judge at the Giessen Regional Court in 2000. This was followed by various secondments, including one to the Hessian Ministry of Justice in Wiesbaden as head of section in the Department of Civil and Public Law, including legal administration and legislative affairs. He then served for five years as a judge at the Wetzlar Local Court before returning to the Giessen Local Court, where he initially served as Vice President and later as acting head. In 2019, he was appointed President of the Giessen Administrative Court and in 2023 transferred to the Hessian Higher Administrative Court. Since then, he has presided over the Second Senate and is responsible for asylum law.
