He completed his studies at THM , earned his doctorate at Justus Liebig University, and is now returning to THM . Prof. Dr. Tobias Oppermann began teaching at the Department of Life Science Engineering at the start of the winter semester.
When Tobias Oppermann speaks to his colleagues about research and teaching, he is also addressing people who once taught him. The newly appointed professor of bioprocess engineering at the Department of Life Science Engineering (LSE) at the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM) completed his bachelor's and then master's degrees in biotechnology/biopharmaceutical technology there from 2008 to 2014 – supported at times by the German National Academic Foundation. His master's thesis was awarded the Robert Paul Kling Prize by the Central Hesse District Association of the Association of German Engineers (VDI) – as was his doctoral dissertation later on.
For this purpose, he moved within Giessen to the Justus Liebig University: Together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology (IME) and the Institute for Bioprocess Engineering and Pharmaceutical Technology (IBPT) of the THM , he researched the optimization of a veterinary vaccine process. Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica in the USA was involved as an industrial partner.
Oppermann gained the necessary industry experience for a professorship at a university of applied sciences at CSL Behring in Marburg starting in 2018. There, he was responsible for the realization and planning of complex biopharmaceutical production facilities and their optimization within the "Project Delivery" department.
Prof. Oppermann cites the development of innovative concepts and process intensification in bioprocess engineering as his area of research interest. His research focus lies at the interface between basic research and scalable, large-scale industrial application.
