Myroslava Kovalchuk with Professors Klytta, Geuting and Reimers (from left)Myroslava Kovalchuk, originally from Ukraine, owes her first encounter with Giessen to a stringed instrument. As a bandurist, she played in the ensemble "Zaspiv" in 2003, which performed at the Giessen -Friedberg University of Applied Sciences as part of a benefit concert featuring international groups. The student from Lviv Technical University didn't limit herself to giving a celebrated concert with her orchestra during her visit. She was also interested in the range of subjects offered at the host university.

Myroslava Kovalchuk has just completed her third stay at the Giessen -Friedberg University of Applied Sciences. The 25-year-old economist worked on her dissertation again in the Department of Economics. Her research focuses on "The Economic Mechanisms of Promoting Export Production in Industrial Companies." In Giessen , she researched material for her dissertation in the library, attended selected lectures, and took advantage of opportunities for professional exchange. Prof. Dr. Derk-Hayo Reimers is her dissertation supervisor at the university. He supports her, for example, in incorporating knowledge and experience from industrialized nations such as Germany and Japan into her research. The topic is highly relevant, as Ukraine is very interested in closer economic ties with the West.

“The two work periods in Giessen have helped me progress. I've made great Further here at the university because I was able to work very intensively on my topic,” Myroslava Kovalchuk summarized shortly before her departure. She lived in an apartment on campus. The accommodation was paid for by the Department of Business's support association on the recommendation of Dean Prof. Dr. Horst-Dieter Geuting. Living expenses and other costs were covered by a programme of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), which enables the Giessen -Friedberg University of Applied Sciences to cooperate with universities in Estonia, Poland, and Ukraine. The initiator of this network at the university, Prof. Dr. Marius Klytta ( Department Electrical and Information Engineering), ensured that her two stays in Giessen could be funded by the “Cooperation of Universities in Central and East Europe” (CUCEE) network.

The young economist plans to complete her doctorate this summer at her home university, Lviv Polytechnic. She intends to continue her academic career afterward. Her cross-border experiences as a doctoral student will be a valuable additional qualification. In Lviv, she will speak about her time at the university in Central Hesse to encourage students to follow her example.
