Two young scientists from the Institute for Medical Physics and Radiation Protection at the Giessen -Friedberg University of Applied Sciences (IMPS) have been honored at this year's conference of the German Society for Medical Physics (DGMP).
Jörg Wulff received the PTW Dosimetry Prize, endowed with €1,500. The sponsor, PTW, is a leading manufacturer of equipment for radiology and nuclear medicine. The 28-year-old research associate in the working group of Prof. Dr. Klemens Zink received the award for an article on "Calculation of Correction Factors for Photon Endosimetry with Ionization Chambers." In his article, the graduate engineer explores the application of computer algorithms for calculating correction factors in clinical dosimetry. Understanding these factors increases the accuracy of dose determination in radiation therapy for humans. Wulff is currently working on his doctoral dissertation at the IMPS (Institute for Medical Sciences and Prevention of Radiotherapy). The University of Marburg is a cooperation partner in this project.
Also at the DGMP conference, 25-year-old Daniela Danova received a poster prize worth 750 euros. The results she presented are based on her diploma thesis supervised by Prof. Dr. Martin Fiebich. In it, Danova developed a simple and effective method for reducing radiation exposure to the uterus. The graduate engineer will begin a master's programme in medical physics at the Department of Hospital and Medical Technology, Environmental and Biotechnology.
