Three scientists from the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen will advise the Federal Government in the coming years on matters relating to protection against the dangers of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation.
Prof. Dr. Joachim Breckow from the Department of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Computer Science (MNI) has been appointed to the Radiation Protection Commission (SSK) by the Federal Minister for the Environment. The 20-member expert panel deals, among other things, with the assessment of biological effects of radiation, the development of radiation exposure of the population, and measures for radiation protection. The physicist Breckow is also the deputy chairman of the SSK crisis team.
Several committees support the Commission. Since the beginning of the year, Prof. Dr. Martin Fiebich from the Department of Life Science Engineering has been a member of the Committee on Radiation Protection in Medicine. This committee deals, for example, with the diagnostic and therapeutic use of radiation and issues related to the qualification of personnel in radiation medicine.
Volker Grimm, a research associate from the Department of MNI, has been appointed to the Committee for Radioecology. There, he deals with questions concerning the origin, occurrence, and spread of radioactive substances in the environment.
All three scientists work at the Institute for Medical Physics and Radiation Protection at THM in Giessen . Their membership in the Radiation Protection Commission and its committees are honorary positions.
