Launched on June 13, 2018 with 60 rental bikes in the THM design and 300 bikes in the JLU design, a total of 390 rental bikes are now available. The prerequisite for use is an individual registration in the nextbike system.
When registering, students can link their account to THM and use their semester contribution to use the first 45 minutes of every trip in Gießen free of charge. Fees apply in all other cities.
Employees and other bicycle enthusiasts can either rent a bike for €1 for every 15 minutes at the basic rate or purchase an annual rate for €60. Holders of an annual rate can borrow a bike for 30 minutes free of charge. Up to four bikes can be borrowed at the same time on one account, but the inclusive minutes of the annual rate and vouchers are usually only valid for the first bike. The annual rate is only valid in Gießen and Marburg. In all other nextbike rental systems, the base rate applies on site.
THM stations for renting and returning bicycles are located on Wiesenstraße, Gutfleischstraße, Eichgartenallee and Bismarckstraße. Stations of the JLU are located in the campus areas Philosophikum I and II, Law and Economics, Sport/Kugelberg and Seltersberg. There is a common station at the train station. Bicycles can only be returned to stations - whether it is a THM station or JLU station and what design the bike has is irrelevant for both rental and return.
The booking can be made, among other things, via the nextbike app and via the nextbike hotline 030 69205046 possible. If you are registered with nextbike, everyone else can too nextbikesystems – worldwide.

Registration/Borrowing:
- The users register individually with nextbike and thereby agree to the terms and conditions.
- Only students of the THM and the JLU receive the special conditions after individual user registration under the special link "Campusbike" from nextbike - the system authenticates the student status.
- The special conditions for students are limited to the system in Gießen .
- THM and JLU employees register via the homepage like all other users. Here you can take out an annual tariff or pay individually for each trip after registering.
- Special conditions of the annual tariff only apply in the Gießen and Marburg systems - other systems may incur other fees.
driving break:
- Selecting the parking function while a bike rental is in progress (within the nextbike APP) allows you to take a break from riding and then lock the bike outside of stations. Other users do not have access to the bike during this time. The travel time continues, however, since no return has taken place. If the number of free minutes is exceeded, a usage fee will be charged (according to the current nextbike regulations).
- For the multiple use of 30 free minutes each ( Gießen students or users annual rate) a journey break of at least 15 minutes is required by return.
Return:
- A return is only possible at designated stations.
- If a station is overcrowded, it is possible to park and return the bikes within a radius of approx. 20 m around the station sign.
- If the rental bike is parked outside the radio range of approx. 20 m, the user will be charged a penalty fee of €20.
- Overcrowded and empty stations are regularly redistributed by a nextbike service team.
