Evaluation of the relationship between previous school education and academic success (ESUS)
- How do the students of different school types cope with the requirements of a course of study?
- Does the school provide the necessary prerequisites for a successful transition?
- How can the university take better account of the different educational paths?
The Technical University of Mittelhessen (THM) has investigated these questions specifically and systematically in cooperation with six partner schools.
Idea - initial situation
Schools and universities are increasingly required to make the transition between the two educational institutions more seamless, transparent and effective.
On the university side, this includes knowledge of the performance profiles and competencies of students and on the school side, knowledge of future study requirements. This knowledge of one another is only sporadically available and is usually only conveyed in individual dialogue. There is a lack of systematic knowledge on both sides about variables critical to success and how these are to be designed.
Results
The study was designed as a panel. A total of 334 study courses of first-year students from three cohorts were examined. As a result of the study, the university and participating schools have gained insights into how entry into studies succeeds depending on the type of school.

cooperation
For the systematic study, the Technical University of Mittelhessen cooperated with six regional schools of different school types.
An expert council made up of school representatives from the cooperating schools oversaw the study. The close cooperation enabled the discussion process of
both sides of the institutions involved in the transition and ensured a direct transfer of the results back to the schools involved.
