Während der vorlesungsfreien Zeit bietet die THM Kurzzeitprogramme in Form von Summer- oder Winter-Schools an. Diese Programme erstrecken sich über einen Zeitraum von 1 bis 4 Wochen und umfassen Blockseminare.
Neben den Kursen wird ein vielfältiges Rahmenprogramm angeboten. Summer Schools bieten eine ideale Gelegenheit, sich intensiv mit einem bestimmten Fachgebiet auseinanderzusetzen, Sprachkenntnisse zu verbessern, interkulturelle Fähigkeiten zu entwickeln oder einfach neue Kontakte mit Menschen aus verschiedenen Ländern zu knüpfen.

International Summer Academy | Mechanical Engineering and Energy Technology
Blended Summer School in Germany – the Engineering Paradise
From July 17 - August 18 2025
From July 17 - August 18 2025 the THM department Mechanical Engineering and Energy Technology (ME) will host an international summer school.

Contents of the Summer School
- Learn about the newest developments in Applied Artificial Intelligence in Mechanical Engineering and Energy Technology, Technical Design, Hydrogen and Alternative Fuel as well as Vehical construction and design methods
- Language of instruction is English
- Receive 15 ECTS and a certificate of completion
- Get to know students from Germany and around the world
- Visit German companies in this professional field & listen to expert talks
- Enjoy a big social programme and field trips for a small social programme participation fee (around 50€)
Undergraduate students from our partner institutions are welcome to participate free of charge!

Part 1: Applied AI in Mechanical Engineering and Energy Technology (2,5 ECTS)
In this course you will learn:
- Overview of AI algorithms (neural networks, genetic algorithms,...)
- Basics of machine learning
- Introduction to data analysis and data preparation
- Use of AI libraries in the Python programming language
- Application of algorithms to specific issues in mechanical engineering and energy technology

Part 2: Motorboat Design Week (2,5 ECTS)
In this course you will learn:
- Sketching and visualizing creative concepts.
- Using AI tools like Vizcom to enhance your designs.
- Building physical prototypes with foam cutters and Styrofoam.
- Exploring design history, industrial design principles, and sustainable practices.

Part 3: Hydrogen and Alternative Fuels (5 ECTS)
After this course you will understand:
- Reaction kinetics
- Principles of reactor design and thermodynamics of fuel cells
- Basics of electrochemistry, gasification and reforming for synthesis gas production
- Alternative energy carriers - production principles, characteristics, and potentials

Part 4: Vehicle Dynamics (5 ECTS)
After this course you will understand:
- The historical development in vehicle construction due to developments in manufacturing, material, drive and body technology
- The tasks, methods and responsibilities of “strategic management” in model planning

Housing
In your application, you will indicate whether you would like to live in our student dorms or if you choose to organize housing yourself.
Since the housing market in Giessen is quite tense, we highly recommend staying in the student dorms.
Dormitories:
- Single room
- Shared kitchen & bathroom
- Cost: 568,00 € (+250€ deposit)
- If needed, you can rent a student dorm starter box (pots, pans, dish towels, plates, etc.) for a small deposit fee from the THM International Office (limited offer)

If you choose to rent your own space, we can recommend the B'n'B hotel (two-bed rooms are available), Hotel Sletz, Giessener Bett, AirBnB or "Gaestehaus Wilhelma".
